No Stamping Today…

HAPPY EASTER!!!!

That's right….no stamping today!!!  I've decided to give my kitchen a makeover!!!  When we bought this house 13 years ago, this kitchen was wallpapered with that old style of paper with the satin finished flowers…YUK!  So I took down all the wallpaper and rewallpapered with apples.  NOW…I have to say 13 years ago – this was a GREAT look…but about 7 years ago I got real sick of it.  That's how long I've been saying it NEEDS TO GO!!!

After I finished my NEW stamping room (you can see that HERE if you missed it-I'm pretty proud of it!), my hubby got going on the bathroom that we gutted 2 YEARS AGO!!!  Yes – I said 2 YEARS AGO!  I'll show pics of that in the near future. It's almost done…I'm in the process of staining and varnishing the baseboards and door/window molding.

So – here's my next project!!! My house is 112 years old…and NO…it doesn't have any character…so don't go "oh I love those old houses, they have so much character!"  The character was ripped out of this house before we bought it.  The previous owners replaced any character it may have had with plastic molding and what we think were products they scavenged out of the dumpster at Menards…like the plastic molding…urghhh!  Any who….this was my kitchen last week….

This is how much wallpaper you can remove after 4 hours of slave labor!!!!

When you work for a total of 8 hours…you can barely stand back and give yourself a big pat on the back!!!

And 13 hours will get you to this dismal point….

It's a painstaking job…and very messy!  I've been using DIFF wallpaper remover and a paper tiger with a large putty knife to remove wallpaper inch by inch.  If anyone has a better idea – PLEASE let me know. This method leaves alot to be desired!  It will be worth it in the end!!!

And with all the work…before I started last Sunday…I decided to crack open that box of ROLL MIX – and here's the result.  They look fabulous…but they really aren't very good.  Too hard and not much flavor.  I wouldn't recommend using the box mix for your cinnamon rolls.  Next time I'll start from scratch.  Anyway – I've been living on these all week – oh sooooo nutritious!!!  I'll work on that when I have time.

Back to the kitchen…I am going to paint my walls, after I repair them of course.  I plan to paint my cupboards a moss green color (very hot right now) and resurface my countertops!!!  I found my revamped kitchen on the Nate Berkus Show – I love him!!!  It's a pretty ambitious project…but I am ready to "get er' done!"  More kitchen updates to come!!!

Thanks for stopping by…

  2. Happy Easter.
Stripping wallpaper is no easy tasks for sure and my heart goes out to you.
Give this method a try and see if it works any better.
    Step 1: Prepare the Room
Place drop cloths at the base of the walls to be stripped. Remove all switch plates and outlet covers from the walls. Cut the power to the room.
    Step 2: Score Wallpaper
Use a wallpaper scorer to create small holes in the paper, which allows the solution to penetrate through to the adhesive base.
    Step 3: Mix Solution
While there are a number of commercially prepared solutions available, little works better than hot water and fabric softener. Combine the water and fabric softener in a large spray bottle at a concentration of one to one.
Tip: Mix the solution in small batches to keep the water as hot as possible.
    Step 4: Soak Walls
Use a spray bottle to saturate a section of the wallpaper. Spray only as much of the wall as you can comfortably strip in a 15-minute period. Allow the solution to soak the paper for a few minutes before beginning.
    Step 5: Strip Wallpaper
Grab pieces of wallpaper at a bottom corner and carefully pull upward. Use a wide putty knife to facilitate the removal of the paper. Repeat the above steps until all the wallpaper is removed.
    Step 6: Clean Walls
In a bucket mix a tablespoon of dish detergent with very hot water. Use a sponge to wipe down the walls, scrubbing carefully to remove all traces of wallpaper adhesive. Finally, rinse down the walls with clean water and towel dry.

  3. Oh my, what a job!!!
My question would be, why bother taking the wall paper down?
We have just recently re-done our bathroom that was wallpapered with yucky old wallpaper. We painted the top half of the walls and wallpapered the bottom — put moulding up for a chair rail and it turned out awesome! When we bought our house 8 or 9 years ago the dining room was very Victorian with that Williamsburg blue and peach wallpaper — gross! We painted over top of it and turned it into a lovely 1950’s retro dining room. We love it and have gotten many compliments on it. No one knows there is wall paper under the paint. As long as the wallpaper is up good and tight (which seeing what you’re going through taking it down — it must not be loose anywhere) it should work great for you!

  4. We had 5 layers of wallpaper on our livingroom walls and we ended up buying a steamer and it worked wonderfully way better than any chemical we tried. You still have to scrub the walls to get the paste off the walls. Or at least when you have 5 layers you do. Good Luck
