Watercolor Salt Technique

If you love techniques that feel a little magical, you’re going to love today’s video tutorial! The watercolor salt technique is beautiful, easy to try, and creates one-of-a-kind results every time. Sit back and enjoy the wonder with this video:

I chose to use Coarse Kosher Salt today – any type of salt will work but I found that “coarse” salt created the best “frosty” features. It does not have to be Kosher – that’s just what I had in my cupboard.

The watercolor salt technique always reminds me of frost creeping across a window on a quiet winter morning, delicate and beautifully unpredictable. After dusting off the salt I added my technique layer to a little vellum atop an embossed SOFT WAVES Basic White layer for a swooshie effect.

Dimensions:

Azure Afternoon – 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
Basic White – 2 at 4″ x 5 1/4″, scrap
Fluid 100 (watercolor paper) – 2 1/2″ x 4″
Vellum – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″

I set all my layers on freezer paper to dry:

Directions:

Spritz water on watercolor (Fluid 100) paper with Stampin’ Spritzer
Add a couple drops of water to Azure Afternoon Ink Refill drops on acrylic block
Brush color across saturated watercolor paper
Sprinkle with coarse salt (any brand)
Allow to dry
Wipe salt off
